CCTV check after Coventry City v Sheffield United pitch invasion

CCTV footage could help identify those who ‘stepped over the line’ 

An investigation has been launched by West Midlands Police following a pitch invasion during the match on Thursday, December 15 against Coventry City and Sheffield United. CCTV footage is now being looked at in the hope of identifying the Coventry City fans who decided to run on the pitch.

If caught, those responsible, of which there was about 100 fans, could face police action.

The 100 Coventry City fans ran onto the Ricoh Arena pitch as the League One match was still in play, in protest against their club’s management.

It’s an unlawful act to run onto a pitch whilst the game is still in play and if caught, fans could face a hefty fine and banned from future football matches.

West Midlands Police are working with the club to help catch the fans responsible and the appropriate action will be taken.

CCTV footage has come to light from the match showing a Coventry City supporter punching a Sheffield United fan in the stands. No-one has yet been arrested as a result.

The pitch invasion happened in the last ten minutes and is now being investigated. As of yet, no one has been arrested in connection with this incident but CCTV footage will be reviewed as part of the investigation.

“The encroachment of the pitch by Coventry City supporters was a disappointing end to an otherwise exciting and trouble free game,” said Chief Inspector Nick Rowe, Head of the West Midlands Police Football Unit.

The incident is also being investigated by the FA, who are waiting for a report from the referee David Webb before appropriate action is taken, which could mean points deducted or a fine.
