CCTV installed at Sheffield pensioner’s home after being scammed by rogue builders
The installation of CCTV cameras comes after the pensioner was ripped-off to the tune of £30,000
A pensioner in Sheffield has been ripped-off by “despicable” rogue traders, who took the 84-year-old for £30,000 – CCTV cameras have now been installed at the victim’s home.
The elderly man, from Ecclesall, was so scared of being a burden to his family, that he kept the scam to himself.
The men responsible have never been caught and are still out there.

Diane Scarr, the victim’s niece is warning others, particularly the elderly, to stay vigilant and keep safe in their home.
The pensioner opened his door to a stranger who said his property needed some repair work doing to it. He agreed to only having a bit of work done to the brickwork and driveway. The rogue builders then demanded £4,000 cash from him.
He withdrew money from one bank account and then went into Sheffield city centre to take the rest out but had a fall and was taken to hospital.
It was only at this point his family found out what had been happening.
When they checked his bank statements, the family discovered that the scam had been going on for five to six years.
Numerous substandard jobs had been carried out on the victim’s home over this period and in total, the pensioner had paid the rogue builders £30,000 in cash.
The pensioners bank did become suspicious, as he would turn up at the bank with someone else. They gave the 84-year-old leaflets about fraud but he was so scared he continued to pay the conmen.
The family reported the whole scam to Trading Standards, who spoke with him and put safety measures in place at the pensioners home, including CCTV cameras.

Sheffield police release CCTV images following assault
CCTV image released of woman suspected of assaulting two young women in a takeaway
South Yorkshire Police have been analysing CCTV footage following an assault in Sheffield and have now released security images to the public in an effort to catch the perpetrator.
The incident took place in a takeaway shop on Sunday, October 30 at approximately 1:50am. Sisters Lydia and Isabel Smith, aged 21 and 18 respectively, were out with a mutual friend in Sheffield city centre when they decided to visit Aslan’s takeaway, in West Street, to get some food before making their way home.
Speaking to The Star, Isabel told how she asked a woman already sitting down at a table if her party could sit there too, as there was limited seating. The woman commented on her politeness and nothing more was said until Lydia brought their food over and put it on the table.
The woman picked up the victims’ food and put it on the floor. Lydia put it back on the table but the woman did the same again, following which she unexpectedly attacked the shocked sisters. The woman pulled at the young women’s hair so hard, that clumps were pulled out, leaving Lydia with a small bald patch.
When takeaway staff intervened to stop the assault, the perpetrator and her friends fled the scene.
The sisters, from Essex, were visiting the Sheffield area as Lydia was considering attending Sheffield University. However, the distressing incident has left them feeling negatively towards Sheffield and no longer safe in the city on a night out.
South Yorkshire Police have analysed CCTV footage from the takeaway and have released a security image of a woman they would like to trace in connection with the incident. The suspect is described as white with short, brown hair. She was wearing a purple-coloured dress on the night of the assault.
Anyone with information is asked to contact police on on 101 quoting incident number 227 of 30 October 2016.

CCTV evidence helps send Doncaster house burglar to jail
The South Yorkshire home was ransacked but CCTV footage placed the man at the scene
CCTV evidence has helped send a burglar to jail after being found guilty of ransacking a house in Doncaster.
The man, named as Shane Christopher Walker, has been jailed for just shy of three years for breaking into the property with the intent of stealing items for his own gain.
The 29-year-old broke into the property on Windmill Avenue, Conisbrough, in early 2016. He gained entry to the house via the back by smashing the patio doors in.
A member of the public who became suspicious of the man rang South Yorkshire Police to inform them. The police arrived at the premises and two men escaped from the house through a downstairs window and fled the scene.
The police did find a number of electrical goods piled up at the property waiting to be stolen.
Forensic and CCTV evidence helped connect Walker, of no fixed abode, to the scene of the crime. At a hearing held at Sheffield Crown Court, Walker pleaded guilty to burglary. He was handed a jail sentence of 32 months.
A burglary at your property can leave you feeling scared and vulnerable in your own home. CCTV can play a huge role in finding and convicting a suspect, as it showed in this case when the man responsible owned up and received a jail term for his crime.
“He has accepted responsibility for his crime and is now behind bars,” said PC Katie Gannon.

CCTV cameras planned for new skate park at High Green
Lights and CCTV cameras will make it safer for children and deter vandals
A new £45,000 skate park in Sheffield which opened in October this year, plans to make the children’s area safer by installing lights and CCTV cameras.
The skate park is located in High Green’s Angram Bank Park and took three years to complete but officially opened to the public on Saturday, October 15. The event was attended by families from the local community and was created to provide youngsters in the area with a safe place to play and spend time with their friends.
One of the people behind the new project, Dave Ogle, aged fifty, said the main reason for creating the park was to help reduce crime in the area and provide a safe environment for children to spend their time.
The new project got local children involved in the design and planning of the park. Megan Moxon, aged 17 and regular park user said: “It was great that they let us design it, it really makes it more for the community.”
Lights and CCTV cameras are part of the next phase of the development, ensuring the area is a much safer place for the children to be and to deter criminals and vandals.
Mr Ogle confirmed that lights and CCTV are definitely part of the next phase, helping to deter vandals and criminal activity.
